Mallorca, Spain
When I was at a conference in Amsterdam, there was one German speaker who developed a system for an insurance company. He jokingly mentioned that they have a specific type of insurance called Mallorca coverage. Mallorca is part of Spain and the biggest of Balearic Islands located in the Mediterranean. Apparently, Germans love spending their vacations on this island. In fact, he didn’t lie. After we settled in our hotel, it was very evident that Mallorca is indeed one of the top destinations for Germans. Most of the shops have signage in German. German football teams all wearing their jerseys singing out loud in every bars. If you’re a German, you would definitely feel as if you didn’t leave Germany.
However, we went there for two reasons: sea and seafood. The sea was okay. We are from the Philippines, so you know what I mean. 馃槈 But that paella at Calixto’s was something. I should have ordered the meat paella because munching at those crab shells was not fun. However, the taste was absolutely chef’s kiss on Calixto’s forehead. It was really that good! Damn! On top of that, you will receive the warmth and enthusiasm of Calixto with his broken English. Well, we didn’t actually knew his name but we just assume that he is the owner of the restaurant. I love that guy.
Aside from eating, we went to different places on the island. From Palma, we visited Soller and took an old train to Port de Soller. We also moved to the other side of the island and rented a scooter to drive around Alcudia and Polenca. It was my first time driving in another country. I was nervous but I had fun. One thing that’s extremely commendable in the island’s old towns was the cleanliness and coziness of it, specially Alcudia and Polenca.
Overall, it was a pleasant experience. Nice places, good food and a much needed sea therapy. However, it was also the time where I unlocked my fear of flights. Small turbulence shoots up my anxiety. o.O
